Bulls Eye on Libraries in Bad Economy

Libraries of all sorts are under attack in our present economy. I think we've all known for years that when the going gets rough, Library services pay the price, but several recent events seem almost unprecedented. Consider:
I don't even care to guess what's happening to our friends in the public library sector. They were under tight guard before the economy tanked. I'm also not sure I find comfort in the fact other professions are facing similar problems.

Unfortunately in tight times, deadwood gets cleared. It's almost an excuse for decision makers to remove elements of the system they don't value or respect. That's not to say that all organizations are like the WSJ, but that's what Librarians & Library Techs are up against.

If there's ever been a point in time when clarity of library services must be addressed, it's now. Putting your skills to use outside of libraries is another option, and obviously the direction I've chosen personally; however, if you're staying to fight, and especially when you do have an employer that values your work -- I would say now is the time to re-prove your value. Even if it means re-inventing your services.

2009 is going to be a bad period for Libraries - all types of libraries. And not just because of the economy, but because some employers see our services (and profession for that matter) as deadwood. We can hold our breath for a library bailout, or... we can fire ourselves up and do something at a micro level.

My suggestion? Start today, because tomorrow just might bring a pink slip.

Darlene Fichter, CALL '08, & Just Being A Librarian

If I wasn't already aware how unfortunate I was to miss CALL this year, the point was driven home further by Connie Crosby's Slaw post & relay of the presentation slides from Darlene Fichter's Web 2.0 session. Darlene's presentation looks like it was outstanding!

And while it sounds like I might have been blushing at the mention of Legalpubs, Slaw & Legalvoices.com all in the same presentation, at the core of that would certainly have been my career-long pride of being a Librarian. Those of you that know me well, will also know how strongly I believe in showcasing our unique skills; or at the very least, a librarian's spin to how the web is evolving.

Then, to boost this feel-good moment a tad further, I see that Wendy Reynolds has launched her first Slaw article titled Why Librarianship?. Wendy's piece is an important one. Not only for showcasing the relevancy of our profession, but also to poke holes at a time when we have an opportunity to renew our role as information intermediaries - this time virtual style! Her addition to Slaw is both exciting, and a comfort.

My personal take is that the future for Librarians is set to skyrocket. Do we need an overhaul to our profession to make that happen? Probably not. But a little fine tuning wouldn't hurt either. And Wendy's point about required technology skills from our MLS graduates is well taken. Not because of a looming gap in traditional Library work (something I'm not totally sold on); but because the world is racing to integrate digital lifestyle (Librarians won't hold credibility if they lag on this), and, because it's an opportunity. Companies want Librarians, if they have the compatible skills to work with the other professionals on their team - who are also all becoming increasingly tech savvy.

But here's the thing. Believe it or not, as a profession we are trail blazers. Sure, the computer programming types are ahead of us, but after that... we're right up there! And we need our new graduates to pickup where current practitioners have left off. No lag. No gap. Just digital savvy information professionals, who might also have an MBA, JD or a graduate degree in another discipline, ready & willing to help as 'concierges of knowledge' to the other professionals, academics, or the guy on the street. [ok laugh a little, but sometimes this librarian needs a grandiose vision :) ]

I just hope we don't miss out on all this over a few coding skills. We need to stay relevant. It's that simple.

Top 25 Librarian Bloggers List

Lots of traffic today related to OEDb's list of Top 25 Librarian Bloggers, of which this blog peaked in at number 17. And while being included in a list like this is always an honour, I've got to wonder how one of the top librarian blogs got omitted? Hmm. Let's just call it very odd.

Now, crazy methodologies aside, lists like these do have some positive effects. I can see definite value to increasing exposure to the profession, and to the good things Librarians bring to the blogosphere. Especially for those of us down on the 'C' list. :-)

And secondly, lists can force many of us (one notable exception being that perceptive Librarian who got omitted - see above) to do what we don't do often enough - check out what we're missing!

So in that spirit, I'm lifting a copy of all 55 librarian blogs that were examined. Read, enjoy and subscribe!
